$$$ STOP PRIVATE PARKING DEAL $$$
(Estimated to cost the Town $500,000 Dollars)

On August 9, 2011 the Wallingford Town Council approved spending a half million dollars ($500,000) to improve private parking lots in the Center of Town.
The Town has entered in lease agreements with four private property owners to improve parking areas adjacent to their buildings. The term of the lease is 30 years and in the lease the Town is required to make the following improvements:
- Reconstruct, re-grade and resurface existing private parking lots
- Install underground wiring, lighting, ornamental poles and signage
- Provide and install conduit and wiring required for underground telephone, television and other communication services for private use
- Remove existing storm drains and reroute storm water drainage pipes to accommodate parking lot improvements
- Perform retaining wall repairs deemed necessary to maintain the wall’s structural integrity
- Construct shields to enclose private dumpsters
- Provide electric service to all exterior lighting on buildings and in the surface areas
- Provide General liability and Commercial Auto and Umbrella Insurance
Under the lease the Town is also required to fully maintain the parking lots. Every 5 years the private property owners and the Town agree to evaluate the need for additional improvements. As specified in the lease, maintenance includes:
- Removal of snow, sand, surface litter and debris
- Provide visible parking lines and traffic markings
- Repair pot holes and breaks in curbing
These improvements will not result in an increase in the number of existing parking spaces. Private property owners will be given 90 passes for unlimited parking. The remaining 40 parking spaces will be available to the public with a 4 hour limit.
